Custom programs for organizations

Our dynamic, highly-interactive programs are based on time-tested models of transformational learning around thought leadership. Games, high-stakes scenarios and live "thought experiments" challenge participants to think in new and bigger ways about what they know, why it matters, and how to use it.  We endeavor to test the best available research and learn from live experimentation. All our programs are designed to share the tools of powerful argument, to generate concrete results, and to inspire and cultivate a sense of social responsibility by empowering participants to see their potential impact on the world. Participants in most longer programs are also granted extended access to our national network of journalist mentors for individual follow-up.

Cost depends on a variety of factors including frequency and length of program, number of participants, and type of organization or institution (we work on a sliding scale). Please contact us to inquire.

+ OWNING EXPERTISE: 90-minute keynote

OWNING EXPERTISE: 90-minute keynote workshop. Led by our founder or senior staff, this interactive keynote workshop is best for groups of 100+. It presents current data on the demographics of public discourse, and addresses core questions of thought leadership: what do we know, why does it matter, and how can we maximum our impact? We will also do a large-group experiment in credibility. Participants will walk away with bold ideas, a deeper sense of what they as well as their colleagues know and stand for, and actionable steps. Keynotes are paired with 10 or more spots in our day-long programs around the nation, in order to maximize concrete results.

+ WRITE TO CHANGE THE WORLD (BASIC): 1-day program

WRITE TO CHANGE THE WORLD (BASIC): 1-day program + 3 months access to our Mentor-Editors for individual follow up support. In this highly-interactive core workshop, we explore how credibility works and how to establish it; how to present ideas quickly and powerfully under pressure; when and why people change their minds; the difference between being “right” and being effective; and strategies for greater impact, including how to escape a pigeonhole, how to preach beyond the choir, and the power in seeing your ideas as part of a bigger picture. Participants leave with an outline of an op-ed in hand, and access to OpEd Project journalist mentors for individual follow up. Note that while we offer one-day programs upon request, in most cases we recommend a 1.5-day or 2-day program (see next), as results increase dramatically.

+ WRITE TO CHANGE THE WORLD (EXTENDED): 1.5- or 2-day program

WRITE TO CHANGE THE WORLD (EXTENDED): 1.5- or 2-day program + 3 months access to our Mentor-Editors for individual follow up support. In this extended version of our Write To Change The World program (see above), we put our ideas to the test, to generate concrete results. The additional time enhances discoveries and results because participants have the opportunity to absorb and act upon information from day one, and to share their ideas-fleshed out overnight—with each other in a language that is broadly accessible (and perhaps not previously available to them). This also serves to foster community and accelerate cross-pollination among colleagues. In 2-day programs, we also explore how we can speak from what we know to what we don't know (pattern recognition, logic maps, and more). Participants leave with a draft op-ed, and access to OpEd Project journalist mentors for individual follow up.

+ ACCELERATING IDEAS: 1.5-day or 2-day program

ACCELERATING IDEAS: 1.5-day or 2-day program + 3 months access to our Mentor-Editors. This workshop is a sequel to our core program (Write to Change the World), which is a prerequisite. It is based on high-level collaboration, and brings previously explored themes together to see how we can connect the dots between disparate ideas, fields, geographies, and time periods. We test hunches and play cross-pollination games. We explore the source of innovative thinking (where do good ideas come from?); and we experiment around timing and timeliness with the goal of stirring creative thinking and discovering unlikely, yet authentic, connections across people, time and space. This program is designed to produce concrete results, and culminates in a large group experiment in which participants come together to produce a publishable op-ed in 15 minutes. Participants receive ongoing access to OpEd Project journalist mentors for individual follow up.

+ PUBLIC VOICES INTENSIVE: 5-day program

PUBLIC VOICES INTENSIVE: 5-day program + 3 months access to our Mentor-Editors: This week-long intensive program builds on our core programming (see above) and focuses on four main themes: Knowledge (what do we know, what do we think we know, and why?), Connection (how can we speed the pace of cross-pollination and hence the pace of innovative thinking?); Contagion (what makes an idea worth spreading?) and Legacy (how can we backward map from the future we want to leave behind?). This one-week program also includes ample time for structured one-on-one feedback, mentoring, workshopping, and editing opportunities for all participants.

+ PUBLIC VOICES GREENHOUSE: 3-month program

PUBLIC VOICES GREENHOUSE: 3-month program + 3 months follow up access to network of Journalist Mentors: Designed for bold, concrete results in a short time frame. Participants convene 3 times (over a period of 12 weeks) for day-long workshops designed to expand thinking, amplify expertise, promote collaboration, increase dialogue across opposition, and generate concrete results. Each workshop focuses on a core concept and variety of media platforms. Convenings also provide a means for participants to collide, cross pollinate and generate new ideas and results. In between convenings, participants are matched with Journalist Mentors who oversee and guide the group--to encourage, coach, edit and support participants in achieving concrete results (op-eds and more). All participants receive access to our Mentor–Editor pool for individual follow-up after the program.

+ PUBLIC VOICES FELLOWSHIP: Year-long program

PUBLIC VOICES FELLOWSHIP: Year-long program (typically extends into an ongoing partnership), including access to our network of Journalist Mentors: This is our highest-impact program, intended for individuals and institutions committed to bigger, long-term results and enduring social change. The goal of this program is to transform a cadre of exceptional thinkers (with emphasis on underrepresented voices, including women) into public intellectuals whose knowledge and influence transcends industries and institutions, to shape the important public conversations of our day. Participants convene in person for a total of four day-long seminar events throughout the year, following these themes: Knowledge (what do we know, what do we think we know, and why?), Connection (how can we speed the pace of cross-pollination and hence the pace of innovative thinking?); Contagion (what makes an idea worth spreading?) and Legacy (how do our ideas play out over time?). Fellows are matched with Journalist Mentors (all high-level journalists) , who work with them for the duration of the fellowship to encourage, coach, edit and support participants in achieving concrete results (op-eds and much more). Participants receive weekly customized email prompts, and join monthly calls with media thought leaders. By partnering with us in this way, institutions typically see value in these ways: (1) increased visibility/prestige; (2) enhanced satisfaction and retention of talent, especially underrepresented (including female) talent; (3) more innovation, driven by intentional cross-pollination across colleagues and disciplines. Institutions strengthen their internal talent pool, increase their institution’s public presence through the voices of their own leadership and community, and help change the demographics of voice in the world.
