Public Program: Write to Change the World

The op-ed pages and commentary forums of top media outlets – whether print, online, or broadcast – are followed by diplomats, businesspeople, scholars, and those in the highest levels of government. They feed all other media and drive thought leadership in America.  They can sway public opinion and change the world.   And they are open to those without publishing experience.

This seminar will push you to think more carefully and more expansively about your knowledge, your ideas, and the causes you care about, and write about them to make a difference.  We will explore the source of credibility and how to establish it; the patterns and elements of a powerful argument; the difference between being "right" and being effective; how to preach beyond the choir, how to think bigger about what you know, and how to make a bigger impact on the world.  This seminar is about much more than writing op-eds--it's about thought leadership in concrete terms.  It is about empowering you to find your voice and make a difference, and it is about the collective impact we can all make by doing so.

Note: The focus of this seminar is on women. If you are a man and would like to attend please contact us.

OUR SCHOLARSHIP POLICY

We are committed to making The OpEd Project programs affordable for any woman who is committed to changing the world with her voice.  To that end, we provide full and partial scholarships for up to 40% of participants in any seminar.

Our scholarship protocol is as follows:  We ask anyone requesting a scholarship to "pay in words" by sending us  a request in writing telling us why the assistance is needed, what op-ed you are committed to writing, and how it will contribute to changing the world.   Once you have submitted a written request to us, we will work with you to find a price you can afford.

We go on the honor system, but  we ask that you request the minimum scholarship that will allow you to attend - so that we can accommodate others who are in need.  If a discount of more than 50% is needed, we request that you first contact your university or employer to see if they will match our scholarship, before requesting additional support from us.   If that option is unavailable to you, we ask that you submit a 750-word draft op-ed, in order to be considered for a majority or full scholarship.

Note: our scholarship policy is designed to ensure that every person who attends one of our programs has made  a payment – whether in dollars or in words – specifically for the purpose of attending the program.   This demonstrates each person’s commitment to us and to fellow participants, and leads to better results and a more vibrant group dynamic.   Although we go on the honor system, please keep in mind that a previously written or previously published op-ed does not meet the spirit of our scholarship requirements.

We very much hope you’ll  join us!  If you need assistance, please be in touch as far in advance as possible.
